A lot of South Indian Temples employ Elephants. These Elephants represent Lord Ganesha and are used in many religious ceremonies. I just love these massive but gentle creatures. When you are near them you feel like they can crush you at any moment. They are usually chained but when you approach them closely (like I did) they can still attack you if they want to. But thats what makes it so exciting.

I’m feeding the Elephant bananas. You purchase bananas from the shop in front of the temple. Its a way to pay for the upkeep of the elephant. You also earn some karma… Notice the lovely brass bells on the elephant.
