Why Congress and BJP leaders love the women’s reservation bill

The women’s reservation bill forces 1/3 of parliamentary (and assembly) seats to be vacated every election for women candidates. Many entrenched and incumbent candidates will find themselves without a seat during this process.

Its not being talked about very much — but this is beneficial for party high commands — they can look at seat allocation afresh without feeling too beholden to the incumbent. In previous elections it was difficult to replace the incumbent unless performance was really dreadful. Many incumbents still got tickets because they had too many IOUs pending with the party.  This made it difficult to replace average candidates for fear of “bad blood.”

This bill shifts the power away from the MPs in favor of the party leadership. Many MPs will fall by the wayside conveniently when a constituency becomes reserved for women.

No wonder the Congress, Communist and BJP leadership loves this bill.

McDonald’s Drive through in Gurgaon

“Drive through” restaurants, a gastric institution in the US are now in India.

There’s one in Gurgaon (actually the outskirts of Gurgaon) and is open 24 hrs. It serves some really tasty pancakes for breakfast!

Sometimes its Dark and Lovely

A lot of Indians are embarrassed at the surfeit of “fairness” creams in this country. “Fair and Lovely” is a prominent brand.

But sometimes its “Dark and Lovely” too… Here is a photo of a skin tanning blend I saw in a Malaysian beach resort. It made me happy to see it. My theory is this: As long as imitation goes both ways its healthy. One way imitation is usually the sign of an inferiority complex. But since the whites want to become browner and the browns want to become whiter its all cool :-) !

Interesting usage of “Live” word

live_appams

“Live” indicates that the “Appam” (like a pancake) is prepared fresh after you order it. How about some “Live” Burgers?

Poor people get out of sight!

Trust.

This is a small but momentous development for India: Our society is becoming more trustworthy (alternative, cynical take: labor costs for “policing” have been factored in this).

This could only happen in the developed world I thought.
