Judge: eBay can keep using “Buy It Now”

eBay can continue to use the popular “Buy It Now” feature on its auctions site after a judge declined to issue a permanent injunction against the online auctioneer in a patent dispute. Ruling in a case of MercExchange v. eBay, Judge Jerome B. Friedman wrote that “traditional equitable principles” do not require eBay to be barred from using the auction.

Supreme Court ruling makes “obvious” patents harder to defend

A new ruling from the Supreme Court says that patents cannot be granted if they fail a test of obviousness. Although it may disappoint some companies with hefty patent portfolios, it’s good news for a patent system in dire need of reform.
