New Research Paper Social Bookmarking Site: CiteULike.org

CiteULike LogoYou may know about del.ici.ous the social bookmarking site that allows you bookmark, tag and share your favorite sites.

Along the same lines there is CiteULike. Conceptually its like del.ici.ous but its much more than that. CiteUlike is targeted at the research community. Citeulike allows you to:

  • Simply specify the URL of a research paper (on Science, Nature, PRL etc.). CiteULike will automatically pick up the details like abstract, authors, DOI link etc.
  • Tag your papers so you can search for them later
  • Upload your papers so you can build a online repository of your favorite scientific papers
  • Become members of user groups with similar research interests as yours and share papers with them. This way you will never miss out on any important papers
  • Other cool features like rating a paper on how important it is to you. You can prioritize your reading time by using this feature.

CiteULike is an amazing tool and I use it to organize all the research papers I’m interested in.

Wikipedia Becomes a Class Assignment

Some academics cringe when students turn to Wikipedia as a reference for term papers, but this teacher made it an assignment to write a Wikipedia article. Students found themselves having to write differently when works were submitted to wikipedia, vs in the classroom; they were now written for more than one reader.

My insight of the day

Map of the Internet

Map of the Internet [link]

My Insight: The more time you spend on the Internet, the smaller you feel!

People are discovering and inventing all kinds of brilliant and amazing things around the world and posting it up on the Internet. And you are just this tiny speck thats experiencing all these world changing innovations. Kinda makes you feel small doesn’t it? The Internet represents a universe of human creation. Just like looking at the stars and galaxies makes you feel small, browsing or stumbling the internet makes me feel so small!

For comparison sake here is the Map of (part) of the Universe. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Each of the small structures are individual galaxies like the Andromeda or Milky Way. Each galaxy is about 100,000 light years end to end! Click on the image for a larger version. (I use this as my wall paper!)

Useful Tip: Search for images in Flickr!

flickr

Often you would like to see photographs of something. Example: All photo’s of VT (Victoria Terminus) in Mumbai. One way is to do a google image search.

Another nice one way is Flickr. This has the additional advantage that you can search for photographs you can use freely (for your website, blog etc.). Most images are copyright with all rights reserved (you may not use these images for any purpose without consent of the author). Flickr allows you to search for images that are licensed under the creative commons license.

This license allows you to use, modify, commercialize photos in a simple to understand way. Just search for images under advanced search in flickr with the creative commons license check box ticked.

Here is a sample search for “VT Mumbai” under the creative license.

If you have lived abroad you probably have used Yahoo/Google Maps. Its an easy way to figure out where a pub or theatre or museum is located. In fact, it can be used to locate almost everything in a city.

With thousands of businesses and destinations of interest in Mumbai and Delhi, such a facility was lacking here. But no longer…Yahoo Maps has come to India!

The uses are endless! To give you the idea of the power of Yahoo Maps for India…here is a map of my future college. You can search for ATMs, restaurants, colleges and much more.
